If you want to take control over network connectivity in standby, just follow this tutorial to add the “Network connectivity in Standby” option to the Power Options in Windows 10.

Method 1: Add “Network connectivity in Standby” to Power Options Using Registry Editor

  1. Open Registry Editor.
  2. Paste the following path into the Registry Editor’s address bar and hit Enter, then double-click the DWORD Attributes on the right side pane to modify.

  3. In order to restore the missing option “Network connectivity in Standby”, you have to change its value from 1 (default) to 2. Click OK.

  4. Close Registry Editor and open the Power Options. If you enable “Network connectivity in Standby” for both “On battery” and “Plugged in“, Windows will keep internet connection active while in sleep mode.

Method 2: Add “Network connectivity in Standby” to Power Options Using Command Prompt

  1. Open the Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Type the following command and hit Enter. This will add the “Networking connectivity in Standby” in Power Options immediately.
    powercfg -attributes F15576E8-98B7-4186-B944-EAFA664402D9 -ATTRIB_HIDE

    If you want to hide the “Networking connectivity in Standby” option later on, run this command instead:

    powercfg -attributes F15576E8-98B7-4186-B944-EAFA664402D9 +ATTRIB_HIDE

Prevent Windows 10 from Disconnecting Network during Sleep

Method 1: Keep Network Connection Active When in Sleep Mode (On Battery & Plugged in)

Open the Power Options. Locate and expand the “Network connectivity in Standby” setting. By default, this setting is hidden and you can make it shown with this trick.

Click to select Enable for both “On battery” and “Plugged in“. Once saving the changes, your computer should stay connected to the network when in sleep mode.

Method 2: Prevent Sleep Mode from Disconnecting Network to Save Battery Power

Open the Settings app and navigate to System -> Power & sleep. On the right-side pane, click the option “When my PC is asleep and on battery power, disconnect from the network” and change it to Never.

Note that this option is only available for Windows 10 laptops and tablets with built-in battery.

Method 3: Use GPO to Allow Network Connectivity during Connected-Standby

  1. Open the Local Group Policy Editor and browse to:
    Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Power Management -> Sleep Settings
  2. On the right pane, you can find the two settings: “Allow network connectivity during connected-standby (on battery)” and “Allow network connectivity during connected-standby (plugged in)“. Double-click on each of them to modify.

  3. Select Enabled and click OK.

  4. Finally make a rebooting to apply the policy settings. Note: These changes will make the “Network connectivity in Standby” setting in the Power Options greyed out and you’re also unable to change the setting for “When my PC is asleep and on battery power, disconnect from the network” in the Settings app.

If your computer still loses network connection in sleep mode, open the Device Manager and access the Properties of your Ethernet/Wi-Fi adapter. Make sure the “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” option is unchecked.

Best Ways to Password Protect Notepad Text Files in Windows 10

Is there any simple way to protect a .txt file with password? Despite everybody knows how to encrypt a word file, most users don’t know how to password protect a plain text file. In this tutorial we’ll show you the best ways to password protect Notepad text files in Windows 10.

Method 1: Password Protect Notepad Text Files with EFS

EFS is the Windows built-in encryption tool which could be used to encrypt individual files and folders on NTFS drives. If you want to add an extra layer of security to your Notepad text files, here’s how to encrypt them with EFS in just a couple of clicks.

  1. Right-click on the Notepad text file you want to encrypt, and select Properties from the context menu.
  2. On the General tab, click Advanced. Next, check the box “Encrypt contents to secure data” and click OK.

  3. A window will pop up asking you whether or not you want to encrypt the file and its parent folder. Select the “Encrypt the file only” and click OK.

  4. The text file you’ve encrypted with EFS will show its file name in green color.

Keep in mind that EFS is only available on Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions of Windows 10. If you’re using Windows 10 Home, you’re out of luck.

Method 2: Password Protect Notepad Text Files with 7-Zip

Notepad doesn’t offer a way to encrypt a .txt file, but you can save the text document into a password-protected zip archive. The freeware 7-Zip lets you password protect your Notepad text files easily.

  1. Click here to download 7-Zip. The file is only 1.4 MB big and installs quickly.
  2. Once installed, right-click on your Notepad text file from Windows Explorer, and then select 7-Zip -> Add to archive option.

  3. When the Add to Archive window pops up, change the Archive format to Zip and enter the password that will protect your text files, and click OK.

  4. You’ll get a password protected .zip archive which contacting your text files. Make sure you remember the password to avoid losing access to the encrypted text files.

Method 3: Password Protect Notepad Text Files with Lock My Folders

If you often have to read or modify text files, Lock My Folders should be your perfect companion for password protecting your .txt file. Encryption is done on filesystem level and is transparent for both users and applications, including text editors.

  1. To start, download and install Lock My Folders. After launching, you’ll be prompted to set a master password which will be used to encrypt / decrypt your files. In order to create an auto-encryption secure folder, click on the Add button. Type the folder name and choose a location for the folder to be created.

  2. Now you can open the secure folder from Windows Explorer. Any files you saved into this folder will be automatically encrypted before writing to physical disk.

    If you use Notepad to open the encrypted .txt file inside the secure folder, it will get transparently decrypted without user interaction so you can view the plain text again.

  3. After dealing with the text files, you can lock the secure folder to prevent it from being accessed. Just right-click on the secure folder in Windows Explorer and select “Lock My Folder“. Additionally, a system reboot or shutdown will put your secure folder into the locked status automatically.

  4. When you need to decrypt and access the secure folder again, you have to enter the correct master password.

  5. If you forgot the master password, all files inside the secure folder remain encrypted and inaccessible. Not only does this stop outside parties from hacking their way into your text files, it also protects in the event that your PC is stolen.

Conclusion

Encryption is the most reliable way to protect your Notepad text files. There are many other tools that can be used to encrypt .txt files, but the above methods should be the easiest and most powerful.

As you can see above, two operating systems installed on my PC are listed with the same name. If you want to use a more friendly OS name, here are 2 simple ways to change operating system name in Windows 10 dual-boot menu.

Method 1: Change OS Name in Dual Boot Menu from Command Prompt

  1. Open the Command Prompt as administrator. Type bcdedit and hit Enter.

  2. Have a look at the “Windows Boot Loader” sections, you can see the identifier and description for each operating system installed on your computer. Make note of the identifier for the OS you want to rename.

  3. Next, run the following command. The “New name” is the desired OS name which you want to see in the boot menu.
    bcdedit /set {identifier} description "New name"

  4. Restart your computer and you will see the new name listed for the operating system in the Windows 10 boot screen.

Method 2: Change OS Name in Dual Boot Menu from PowerShell

  1. Open the PowerShell as administrator and use the same command bcdedit to find out the identifier of the operating system you want to rename.
  2. To rename your OS, type the following command. Note that you must use quotes around the identifier.
    bcdedit /set '{identifier}' description "New name"

  3. When it’s done, reboot your PC and the new operating system name should appear in the boot entry at startup.

Can’t get past the password screen while the computer is booting? When you ran into this situation, it’s possible that you forgot the BIOS password or Windows password on your PC. In order to determine which type of password it is, you need to know the differences between a BIOS password and a Windows password.

BIOS Password:

BIOS (or UEFI) is non-volatile firmware used to perform hardware initialization before calling the boot loader to start the OS. BIOS has a setup utility which provides the ability to view and manage your computer’s hardware settings, such as changing the boot order or enabling CPU virtualization.

Through the BIOS Setup Utility, you can set up two different types of passwords:

  • Setup password: The computer will prompt for this password only when you are trying to access the BIOS Setup Utility. This password is also called “Admin password” or “Supervisor password” which is used to prevent others from changing your BIOS settings.
  • System Password: This will be prompted before the operating system can boot up. This password might also be called “User password” or “Power-on password” and it can stop someone powering up your computer.

If you forget any of these passwords, the reset process can be difficult or impossible. Depending on the motherboard of the computer in question, you can clear a lost BIOS password through jumper settings or removing the CMOS battery.

Windows Password:

Windows allows you to create separate accounts for different people to share a single PC. Each person can set a unique Windows password for their accounts to prevent unauthorized access.

If you forgot your Windows password and can’t log in to your PC, just boot your PC with PCUnlocker Live CD or USB and you can remove the password with ease.

Conclusion

When you delete a file, Windows only marks the file as deleted and it continues existing on your hard drive, even after you empty it from Recycle Bin. The deleted files can be recovered using data recovery software until they’re overwritten. In this tutorial we’ll show you how to use Microsoft’s command-line utility to securely delete, shred and wipe your files in Windows 10, so they can’t be recovered.

Part 1: Securely Delete Specific Folders or Files

To get started, download the SDelete utility from Microsoft’s website. After extracting the download file, copy the resulting .exe files to the System32 directory: C:\Windows\System32.

Open the elevated Command Prompt and you can securely and permanently delete any folder or file by running this command:
sdelete.exe -p 3 -s "your_folder_or_file"

By default, SDelete will overwrite the given file only once. You can use the –p option to specify the number of times to overwrite the data.

Part 2: Securely Wipe & Overwrite Free Space on Entire Drive

How can I overwrite the files that have been previously deleted without using the SDelete utility? To securely wipe all files and folders you have already deleted, simple run the following command to overwrite all free space on your drive. Replace D with the drive you want to clean up.
sdelete.exe -c:D

This command will only wipe the free space to prevent recovery of deleted files, and it won’t affect any files on your drive, so it’s safe. There is a similar built-in console tool called cipher.exe which also lets you wipe the free disk space, but it’s much slower than SDelete.
cipher /w:D

Conclusion

Using the SDelete utility you can securely delete files and wipe free space in Windows 10 to prevent any sensitive data from falling into the wrong hands. Despite SDelete does not have a graphical user interface, it is still easy for anyone to use.

Create Windows 10 bootable USB from ISO on Mac without BootCamp

How can I make a bootable Windows installation USB on Mac OS X? After upgrading to macOS Mojave, you may find that Boot Camp Assistant is no longer supported and thus creating a bootable USB turns out to be a little bit challenging. In this tutorial we’ll show you how to create Windows 10 bootable USB from ISO on Mac, by using the Terminal or third-party software like UNetbottin.

Method 1: Create Windows 10 Bootable USB on Mac Using UNetbottin

UNetbootin is a free, open source utility that allows you to create bootable USB drives on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. If you’ve downloaded Windows 10 ISO image, here is how you can create a bootable Windows installer USB on Mac using UNetbootin.

  1. Plug a USB drive into your Mac and open Disk Utility. Select your USB drive from the left panel and click on Info button. Note down the device name since we will need that later.

  2. Next, download and launch the UNetbottin utility. Select the “Diskimage” radio button, click “” to select a bootable ISO image.

  3. After locating your Windows 10 ISO file, click on Open.

  4. Choose Type as USB Drive and select the device name of your USB drive (you probably would’ve noted it down earlier, so refer to that). Click OK to start installing to the USB drive.

  5. This process takes several minutes or longer, depending on the size of your selected ISO image.

Method 2: Create Windows 10 Bootable USB on Mac Using Terminal

Of course, if you prefer not to use third-party software, you can still use the excellent Terminal app, which is a little bit more involved, but no additional software needs to be installed. Follow these steps:

  1. After connecting a USB drive to your Mac, open a Terminal window and type diskutil list to display all the disks attached to your machine. You have to figure out the disk identifier of the USB drive you need to format. In my example, my USB drive is mounted as “disk2” and it’s about 32GB.

  2. Next, run the following command to format your USB drive and name it “WIN10“, where # is a placeholder for the disk identifier of your USB drive.
    diskutil eraseDisk MS-DOS "WIN10" GPT disk#

  3. Now, mount your Windows 10 ISO image with the command below, assuming it’s saved the Downloads folder. In my case, it is mounted as a volume named “ESD-ISO“.
    hdiutil mount ~/Downloads/your_windows_10_image.iso

  4. Finally, run the following command to copy all the files from the mounted ISO to your USB drive.
    cp -rp /Volumes/ESD-ISO/* /Volumes/WIN10/

    This command will take a while, and once it finishes, you can disconnect the mounted ISO with this command:
    hdiutil unmount /Volumes/ESD-ISO

  5. Now you should be able to boot from the USB to install Windows 10 on your Mac or Windows machine.

Conclusion

These should be the easiest ways to create a Windows 10 bootable USB from ISO on Mac, without using Boot Camp Assistant. No matter which method you prefer, be sure that you backup any important data on your USB drive, as the procedure of creating bootable USB will delete everything on it.

  3. When you no longer need to access the mounted drive, just right-click on it and select Eject.

  1. Click the “Finder” icon in the dock. select Applications in the sidebar, then double-click the Utilities folder and then double-click Disk Utility.

  2. Once Disk Utility is open, click the File tab on the menu bar and then select Open Disk Image.

Method 3: Open and Mount ISO file on Mac Using Terminal

  1. Open up a Terminal window and you can mount an ISO image by executing the following command. Note down the name of the destination mount point (e.g. /Volumes/PCUnlocker) as we need to use it to unmount the disk.
    hdiutil mount ~/PathToYourISO/filename.iso

  2. When you no longer need to work with the ISO, here’s how to unmount it:
    hdiutil unmount /Volumes/mount-point

Method 1: Change Other User Password on Mac from Users & Groups

  1. Click the ‘Apple’ logo in the menu bar, and then select System Preferences.

  2. When the System Preferences window opens, click on the Users & Groups icon.

  3. Click the lock icon in the bottom left corner to unlock the settings. Enter your current Mac account password and click Unlock.

  4. From the list of users on the left side, select the account you’ve forgotten the password for and then click on Reset Password button.

  5. Fill in the new password twice and set up a password hint, and then click on Change Password.

  6. Now you can log in to your locked Mac account with the new password.

Method 2: Change Other User Password on Mac Using Terminal

Using the terminal you can change other user password without old password on macOS High Sierra or earlier versions. However, since macOS 10.14 Mojave the terminal still requires you to provide the old password.

  1. Open up the Terminal window and type the following command:
    sudo passwd account_name

  2. Once pressing Enter, you’ll firstly be prompted to enter the password of the current admin account you’re logging into. After that, you need to enter the new password twice for your target account. If you’re running macOS Mojave, the old password is required before you can set a new password.

In this tutorial we’ll show you how to make Windows 10 hide the local administrator account from the UAC prompt, so standard users have to enter both user name and password of a local administrator account to elevate its permissions.

Method 1: Hide Administrator Account in UAC Prompt Using Group Policy

  1. Open the Local Group Policy Editor and browse to:
    Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Credential User Interface

    Double-click the “Enumerate administrator accounts on elevation” policy.

  2. Set it to Disabled. Click Apply and then OK.

  3. The next time you require UAC elevation, you should be required to type in both a username and password.

Method 2: Hide Administrator Account in UAC Prompt Using Registry Editor

For those using a Home edition of Windows 10 which lacks the Local Group Policy Editor, you can use the following registry tweak to hide the administrator accounts from the UAC prompt.

  1. Open Registry Editor and navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\CredUI

    If you do not have the CredUI key, then just create it.

  2. Right-click any blank area in the right panel and select New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name it EnumerateAdministrators and leave its value as 0.

  3. Close Registry Editor.

If you need to make UAC prompt show administrative accounts again, just change the value of EnumerateAdministrators to 1 and you’re done.


How to Change UAC Behavior for Standard Users in Windows 10

When a standard user tries running a program that needs elevated permissions, the UAC prompt will prompt you to enter administrator credentials to confirm. If you want to avoid being prompted all the time, you can set UAC to automatically deny elevation requests.

In this tutorial we’ll show you 2 simple ways to change UAC behavior for standard users in Windows 10.

Method 1: Change UAC Behavior for Standard Users Using Group Policy

  1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run box, type secpol.msc and hit Enter.

  2. In the Local Security Policy window, navigate to Local Policies -> Security Options. On the right, double-click the policy called “User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for standard users“.

  3. Click the drop-down box to select the UAC behavior you want to set for standard user accounts, and then click OK.

Method 2: Change UAC Behavior for Standard Users Using Registry Editor

  1. Open Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

    Next, double-click on the DWORD ConsentPromptBehaviorUser to modify it.

  2. Set its value data to one the following values:
    • 0 – Automatically deny elevation requests
    • 1 – Prompt for credentials on the secure desktop
    • 3 – Prompt for credentials (Default)

  3. Reboot your machine to apply the changes.

How to Fully Shutdown Windows 10 Instead of Hibernating It

By default, Windows 10 enables a feature called Fast Startup (Hybrid Shutdown) that can shut down and boot up your PC much faster than Windows 7 or previous versions of Windows. When you shutdown Windows 10, you’re actually performing a partial hibernation.

If you prefer to have your PC completely shut down, you can either turn off Fast Startup feature or use the following methods to fully shutdown Windows 10.

Method 1: Perform a Full Shutdown Using Shift Key

We’ve covered many different ways to shutdown Windows 10 in the past, but you might not realize that Windows 10 is just doing a hybird shutdown by default. If you would like to perform a full shutdown, simply hold down the SHIFT key on your keyboard and then click the “Shut down” option in the Start Menu, or on the sign-in screen.

Method 2: Perform a Full Shutdown Using Command Prompt

Just open an elevated Command Prompt or PowerShell window, type the following command and press Enter:

shutdown /s /f /t 0

This will immediately close any open applications without prompting to save your work, and completely shut down your PC.

Conclusion

The Fast Startup feature can make your computer boot up faster, saving valuable seconds every time you turn on Windows 10. However, if your Windows 10 was installed on a speedy solid-state drive (SSD), Fast Startup don’t actually make any difference and a full shutdown is recommended.

Windows 10: Hide or Unhide Folders / Files Using Command Prompt

Is there a way to hide important files to prevent accidental deletion? In this tutorial we’ll show you how to hide or unhide folders / files in Windows 10 using Command Prompt.

Hide Folders or Files

When you’re going to hide a specific folder or file, open up the Command Prompt and type:
attrib +h "your_folder_or_file"

This command will assign the “Hidden” attribute to your target folder or file, and make it disappear from the File Explorer view.

If you need to hide all files and subfolders in your target location (for exmaple, D:\demo), run this following command:
attrib +h "d:\demo\*" /s /d

List Hidden Files

If you need to list hidden files and folders while in Command Prompt, use the CD command to change your working directory and then type:

dir /a:h

This will show all hidden folders or files in that location.

Unhide Folders or Files

When you need to unhide a specific folder or file, execute this command:
attrib -s -h "your_hidden_folder_or_file"

In order to unhide all hidden files and subfolders under a location (e.g. D:\demo), type this command:
attrib -s -h "d:\demo\*" /s /d

That’s it! The built-in option to hide folders/files is pretty easy but it’s not secure because anyone can unhide them the easy way. If you need to hide sensitive files from prying eyes, it’s a good idea to use third-party softwares (for instance, Protect My Folders) to hide and lock your folders/files with a password.

3 Ways to Clear Clipboard History in Windows 10

When you use Ctrl + C to copy text, images or other information in Windows, your data will be stored in the clipboard temporarily so you can then paste it somewhere else. Clipboard works as a temporary repository for data during copy-and-paste operations. In this tutorial we’ll show you different ways to clear clipboard history in Windows 10.

Method 1: Add An Empty Item to Clipboard History

Press the Windows key + R to open the Run box, then type cmd /c “echo off | clip” and hit Enter.

This command will add an empty item to the clipboard history so you then can’t paste anything anywhere. This method could also be used to clear clipboard history in Windows 8, 7, Vista.

Method 2: Clear All Clipboard History Data from Settings App

Open the Settings app and navigate to System -> Clipboard. On the right pane, you can turn off the “Clipboard history” toggle switch to prevent Windows clipboard from saving multiple items. In this case, only the last item you copied into the clipboard will be saved.

When the “Clipboard history” feature is turned on, you can click the “Clear” button to manually clear all history items from the clipboard.

Method 3: Clear Specific Item in Clipboard History

Just press the Windows key + V in any application, a Clipboard panel will appear where you’ll see a list of items (such as text and images) that you have recently copied from different applications.

Click on the three dots icon on the upper-right part of the clipboard item you want to delete. When the pop-up menu appears, you can select Delete to clear it.

BitLocker Recovery Password Viewer tool is an optional feature included with Windows Server 2008 – 2019, which lets you store and view BitLocker recovery keys in AD for all client computers. By default, this feature is not installed and BitLocker Recovery tab in ADUC is missing. In this tutorial we’ll show you 2 methods to install BitLocker Recovery Password Viewer for Active Directory in Windows Server 2008/2012/2016/2019.

Method 1: Install BitLocker Recovery Password Viewer Using Server Manager

  1. Open Server Manager and click on “Add roles and features“.

  2. Click Next through the wizard until you get to the Server Roles page. Make sure “Active Directory Domain Services” is checked.

  3. In the Features page, check the “BitLocker Drive Encryption” feature.

    For Windows Server 2008, you need to expand Remote Server Administration Tools –> Feature Administration Tools and check the option for “BitLocker Drive Encryption Administration Utilities

  4. If you’re prompted to confirm adding features that are required for BitLocker Drive Encryption, click on Add Feature button.

  5. Once completing the wizard, take a look at the Computer Properties dialogue box in Active Directory Users And Computers, you’ll see the BitLocker Recovery tab.

Method 2: Install BitLocker Recovery Password Viewer Using PowerShell

If you need to install BitLocker Recovery Password Viewer on a server running Windows Server Core, try this method:

  1. Press the Windows key + X or right-click on the Start button to open the context menu, then select Windows PowerShell (Admin).

  2. Run the following command to add the optional “BitLocker Drive Encryption” feature:
    Install-WindowsFeature BitLocker -IncludeAllSubFeature -IncludeManagementTools

  3. When it’s done, you’ll be prompted to restart your server to finish the installation process.
